10 Scripts in 10 Weeks

I’ve told this story a number of times over the past couple of months, and I’d like to relate it again here, in this space, as my first blog post.

Over the summer I got hooked into a writing challenge. The “challenge” as it was issued, was via the wife of a buddy of mine. She is a Harlequin Romance writer, and as it was originally issued it was that you could write a novel in 70 days by writing a set portion each and every day.

I chose to — not write a novel (I actually have a novella that I’ve written, and am in the process of typing up, as I wrote it longhand) — but to pen a number of comicbook scripts; which I did. I chose to write 10 eight-page scrips in the 10-week period of the challenge. What I wound up doing was writing eight 8-page scripts, eight 1-page scripts (for an on-line comic I have in the works — more later) and one 16-page script.

Of the 10 scripts that I wrote, I have already had two accepted for publication, one is under serious consideration, one is already drawn, and two others are being looked at by artists who are considering drawing them.

I’m telling you all of this not to brag, but to let you all know that it is possible to accomplish being creative while working a full-time (non creative) job. Also, for a month of that time I was actually working two jobs. Oh yeah, during that time I also wrote my on-line movie review column, but I penned two feature articles for a pair of local (non-comics) magazines for which I write.

So when I hear about folks who are trying to get published and/or break into comics who keep missing deadlines, for whatever reasons, I just want to say that if you really want to get into this business, it would behoove you to actually get stuff done.

You all can now return to your regularly-scheduled lives.
